Mazmur 86 tampil sebagai mazmur ratapan pribadi yang unik karena posisinya menyela kumpulan mazmur bani Korah. Berbagai metode penafsiran telah diterapkan terhadap Mazmur 86 yang menghasilkan beragam pesan sentral. Melalui penerapan metode penelitian puitis-afektif pembacaan dilakukan terhadap Mazmur 86. Penelitian puitis-afektif mencakup empat tahapan pembacaan: keluhan, perasaan, Allah, dan perubahan suasana teks (mood) yang menggambarkan dinamika perjalanan silih berganti antara ratapan dan pujian. Pembacaan penelitian puitis-afektif terhadap Mazmur 86 menghasilkan pesan sentral Allah besar sebagai respons teologis pemazmur terhadap realitas sinkretisme bangsa. Pesan sentral Allah besar menyingkapkan, berbeda dengan kebanyakan penafsir, bahwa Mazmur 86 lebih tepat dipahami sebagai mazmur ratapan dari periode sebelum pembuangan (pre-exilic) bukan mazmur dari periode pembuangan atau pascapembuangan.
